This is the scene where Ralph first finds the conch in the water. This scene is right after the crash had happened and the survivors were scattered all across the island. Ralph had spotted the shell in the water, but didn’t know what its use was. Piggy told him it was a conch, which is used to call people by blowing into the opening of the shell. Piggy told Ralph to use the shell to call all the survivors together for a meeting. He was very concerned about if there were others on the island and if there were, he wanted to know how many. This scene is very important because this is where we first get introduced to a lot of the main characters and when they meet each other. It is also important because in the meeting the survivors decide who should become the leader. They vote and the leader becomes Ralph. Jack becomes the leader of the hunters.
